Broadening Participation in Science
Overall, we are committed about developing and supporting efforts to broaden participation from underrepresented groups. We actively support undergraduate and graduate education efforts to promote inclusion and equity. Our lab is an inclusive, diverse environment where we are all appreciated and given a chance to fully participate.
At Purdue, we support programs to assist students from historically marginalized groups serving as mentors for the following programs: Purdue Emergent Leaders Scholar Program, Horizon Student Support Services, Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) and our local SACNAS chapter. We are also strong supporters of the Colombia Student Association at Purdue (CSAP) with Dr. Ximena Bernal being their Faculty Advisor since 2016. Finally, we also support the Global Science Partnership Learning Community. Beyond our institution, we actively promote diverse views of scientists at local schools and beyond (see more here).
There are many benefits of inclusion and equity! Many articles have focused on the benefits of having diverse perspectives and voices in academia. A great summary of resources about it can be found here. We have also contributed to the conversation about inclusion and equity in STEM focusing on gender inequality:

Amplifying the voices of Black Researchers in EEB
Scientist Spotlights Initiative aims to promote diversity and inclusion in science – middle school through college – through development, assessment, and dissemination of curriculum supplements that bring science role models to students in the context of learning science content. As a lab, we wrote spotlights for this initiative based on scientists we admire. We invite you to check them out and learn about their work!
